In system integration projects, devices like video wall processors, fixed matrix switchers and modular matrix switch are commonplace. While all serve as vital components, they operate on distinct principles and functionalities. So, how do we easily distinguish between a matrix switcher,Modular matrix/video wall processor?

1. Principle Differences
- Fixed Matrix Switcher (seamless matrix switch) : This device routes multiple input signals to several display units, typically with more input signals than output signals. Among fixed Matrix switcher, recently there are Seamless Matrix switchers widely used in the market, the main difference is the switch, when the normal matrix switching, there will be black on the screen for a second. However, for the Seamless matrix, there’s no black screen when switching.
- Video Wall Processor/Modular Matrix switch: Unlike a matrix switcher, a video wall processor divides a complete video signal into N segments and allocates each segment to N display units (such as LED, LCD, DLP, PDP). Input signal quantity and type for a video wall processor depend on user requirements, with the output signal quantity matching the number of display units. Additionally, the signal compatibility of a video wall processor is highly flexible, allowing for the assembly of various types of interface cards on a single device, including VGA, DVI, HDMI, SDI, and CVBS. More safely the modular matrix with redundant power supply. Meanwhile, there support more controls with the modular matrix, such as RS232, TCP/IP control, Tablet/Phone control. Finally, the modular matrix is easy to replace cards if there is any problem with the ports.
2. Functional Differences
- Due to their operational variances, matrix switchers can only handle signal switching without processing or effects. In contrast, video wall processors / modular matrix switch offer robust functionality, combining matrix capabilities with features like arbitrary windowing, roaming, overlaying, scene saving, and rotation.
- The distinct functionalities of matrix switchers and video wall processors/modular matrix translate into different roles within system integration projects. Users select and integrate these devices according to project requirements, with the possibility of simultaneous control.
When it comes to selecting a matrix switcher for practical applications, there are a few tips to keep in mind:
1. Determine Signal Distribution vs. Switching Needs

- Signal distribution, where one input signal is distributed to multiple output signals, requires a distributor. You can choose HDMI splitter when there is one signal input, split to multi displays.
- For scenarios involving multiple input signals routed to one or more output signals, a switcher or matrix switcher is preferable.
2. Selecting the Matrix Signal
- Choose a matrix switcher based on the signal format:For audio signals (A), opt for an audio matrix switcher. For video signals (V), select a video matrix switcher. For audio-video mixed signals (AV), choose an audio-video matrix switcher. For computer display signals (VGA), go for a VGA matrix switcher. For network digital signals, consider a network video matrix switcher.
3. Determining Matrix Scale
- Matrix scale selection hinges on the number of input and output ports required. When designing the system, determining the number of signal sources usually dictates the scale of the matrix.
For instance, in a small smart conference room with 16 computers needing to display video content on 16 screens, we can follow these guidelines: firstly, signal switching is required; secondly, computers typically output VGA signals, and the screens have compatible interfaces, indicating an HDMI matrix. Finally, considering the input and output quantity, we opt for a 16×16 HDMI matrix. Similarly, if audio transmission is required, selecting an HDMI matrix with audio capabilities follows the same straightforward process.
The AVOIP Encoder and Decoder is also widely used as matrix in thoese AV integration projects. The economic solution is H.264,265 and JPEG2000 for commercial applicaiton. For medical installation, we suggest SDVoE solution with more uncompressed high quality signals transmission.
However, selecting the right HDMI matrix isn’t the end of the process. It’s essential to inquire about the manufacturer’s after-sales service. Equipment may sustain damage during use, and post-purchase issues may arise. A reliable after-sales service can effectively address any problems, minimizing inconvenience for the user.
