Office Chair Vs Gaming Chair: Which Is Best For Comfort ...

When it comes to picking a chair for your game room or home office, the are two predominant styles of seat you can pick from: An office chair, or a gaming chair. Both are chairs, both offer a variety of ergonomic features and a comfortable place to rest your behind, but there's a distinct difference in style between the two.

The AndaSeat Jungle 2 is a mid-range, compact gaming chair with adjustable lumbar and neck support.

While gamers might be tempted to buy a bucket-seat gaming chair, and office workers something more professional looking, you aren't locked to one preference over the other, and if it turned out you could get a better chair at a similar price, maybe it'd be worth testing the waters in the other camp?

That's what I endeavored to find out by testing a pair of chairs from two different companies with very different brands and product lines. In the battle of the office chair vs. the gaming chair, which comes out on top?

The Office Chair

Flexispot

Shop Ergonomic Office Chairs At Flexispot

Flexispot sent over its Flexi-Chair BS1B ergonomic office chair for me to trial, and it proved a capable chair for day to day use. It was easy enough to put together with well-translated instructions, and the overall look is both professional and understated&#;no gaudy colors, no oversized features, and a functional design with plenty of adjustment for customizing the fit for your shape and size.

Mesh backs are one of the most obvious differences between most office chairs and gaming chairs. Where the latter are almost exclusively built around the racing bucket-seat design with a solid back, office chairs are most typically made with mesh backs to improve airflow and help you stay cool during long work days.

The Flexispot Flexi-Chair BS1B is a mid-range office chair with a mesh back, adjustable headrest, ... [+] and 4D arm rests.

Jon Martindale

The overall build quality of the Flexi-Chair was decent, if a little unpolished. It's sturdy and well put together, but there is a lot of heavy duty plastic, and in some places the finish is a little rough&#;especially where bolts and screws are concerned. The coasters are effective and relatively quiet, but basic, leaving me wondering about long term durability.

The seat cushion, however, is excellent. It provides plenty of padding, and is both broad and deep enough to allow traditional sitting and sitting cross legged if you prefer. The arm rests can also be lifted out of the way entirely to facilitate a variety of seating positions. They can also be adjusted in height and angle, letting you position them wherever you find the most comfortable.

The lumbar support is incredibly sturdy, but rather stiff, and at a fixed height, it's not ideal for ... [+] those outside the normal height ranges.

Jon Martindale

Aside from a few of the rougher edges with this chair, my only real complaint was the lack of an adjustable lumbar support. While Flexispot has eschewed the economical option of providing a simple cushion to support your lower back, the fixed solution is restrictive. If you are only a few inches either side of the average height, you should find it hits the right spot to provide excellent support.

At 5'5", I found myself just dipping outside of the range enough that I couldn't get the lumbar support to feel right. If you're closer to the median, then you're going to have much greater success than I, and it may be that I'll just need to opt for chairs with adjustable lumbar support to maximize my personal comfort, but it's an important factor to take into consideration if you stray more than a few inches from average height.

The Gaming Chair

Anda Seat

AndaSeat Jungle 2 Series Gaming / Office Chair with Footrest

The AndaSeat Jungle 2 is a mid-range gaming chair with the classic bucket seat design, a pair of adjustable support cushions, adjustable arm rests, and a built-in foot rest. It was relatively easy to put together, the frame is very sturdy, and it features a high-quality faux leather finish with neat stitching throughout.

The bucket design makes it a warmer chair to sit in; despite the two big holes at he back for passing through the cushion straps, there is zero airflow with this chair. If you're a particularly perspirant gamer, you may want to skip this style of chair.

Still, the support is firm, and the lumbar support cushion is decent and entirely adjustable. It's not as supportive as the built-in support on the Flexispot chair, however, so if you need a firm cushion for your lower back, you may need to augment this with one of your own.

Jon Martindale

The rest of the chair is equally adjustable. It has a decent height range, a very sturdy and versatile tilt mechanism, and arm rests that can move up and down and change angle. The only options are 45 degrees in and out, however, or straight forward, which doesn't provide much nuance for forearm placement. The coasters are very well built; they seem likely to last longer than the Flexispot chair's options, and they're reasonably quiet on vinyl floor and carpet.

I like the foot rest too, though it's far less impressive than the rest of the chair. It holds up my legs well enough and it's nice to have the option of leaning back to a more relaxed posture. But the build quality doesn't feel nearly as good as the rest of the chair. It's a bit rickety and there's no nice stitching, just stapled fabric. It feels like it's from a much cheaper chair.

Should You Buy An Office Chair Or A Gaming Chair?

As with many types of furniture, especially those that you sit on and have to spend a large portion of your day and working life on, personal preference is going to be key in your chair buying decision. That said, there are some clear factors that favor one style of chair over the other, and they came to the fore during my testing of these two very different styles of seat.

The Flexispot BS1B is cool to sit in, even if it isn't cool to look at. If you want something ... [+] professional, though, that may be more to your taste.

Jon Martindale

Gaming chairs that utilize the bucket seat design principle are both more sturdy and more restrictive. The solid back and base of the AndaSeat Jungle 2 felt supportive and secure throughout the extent of my testing period. However, its strict adherence to its bucket-seat inspiration means that it has the same 'wings' as you find in seats in actual cars the kind that hold you stable while you go around corners. All they do on a chair like this, though, is make it hard to sit firmly back against the back rest without sloping your shoulders &#; not good for posture.

It also gets pretty hot and even in the demure black that it came in, it doesn't look particularly professional. It looks cool though, so depending on the style of chair you're looking for, that might be better.

The AndaSeat Jungle 2 casters look and feel far more sturdy than the standard plastic counterparts ... [+] on the Flexispot chair.

Jon Martindale

The FlexiSpot BS1B office chair, on the other hand, does look professional. It's also airy, helping you stay cool, and its broader back design has much more room to sit flush against the backrest. The lack of adjustable height on the lumbar support is problematic for me personally, but if you're willing to throw on an extra cushion for added padding, or are simply not as far from the average height as I am, then you should be alright.

Ultimately, if given the choice, the office chair feels more me. In this particular case it's definitely not as sturdy overall, and the finish isn't as nice. It feels like it might not last as long as the AndaSeat Jungle 2 either, and it's certainly not as cool looking. But its broader design is both more accommodating of correct posture and breaks away from the rather played-out bucket seat design of most gaming chairs.

It lacks a few of the bells and whistles of the AndaSeat, and actually, I think the Jungle 2 is a better built chair. But it doesn't make it a better one, at least not for me.
