Teeth Whitening for all: Vegan Friendly & Cruelty Free

While less than 10% of Americans have adopted a vegan lifestyle, studies show that those who avoid meat altogether, have better overall heart health, lower their chances of obesity, diabetes, and high blood pressure. Given the benefits, it’s surprising that more people aren’t vegan. But being vegan can be challenging since animal-derived products are pervasive in nearly every industry – including oral care products.

That’s why when looking for teeth whitening ingredients to avoid for vegans, it’s important to check labels. Most companies will tout their vegan claims on their packaging, but it helps to know what ingredients to stay away from. For example, glycerin is a common ingredient found in most toothpastes. While it’s considered a “natural” property that helps to preserve toothpaste and retain its sweetness, glycerin is often derived from animals or animal byproducts.

Similarly, calcium phosphate is a natural mineral, yet it is frequently made from ground animal bones, which is something vegans (and possibly even non-vegans!) will want to keep out of their mouths.

Plus Ultra Premium Teeth Whitening Strips, Eco-Friendly ...

I have tested quite a few of these whitening strips from all different brands. This one stood out to me because the strips are probably one of the longest I've used. It was able to cover all the teeth beyond what's seen when I smile. This stuck very well and the back part where you tuck over and behind your teeth does relatively stay put, it wasn't folding upwards and making my mouth feel uncomfortable like some of the other brands I've tried. This is one of the more comfortable ones in that it doesn't feel like it is jabbing in your gums/tongue, but also sturdy and durable to where it stays stuck. The strips stuck very well and I believe the longer you leave them on the easier it is to peel off. You are supposed to use these for 30 minutes but the instructions also say to leave for 45 minutes if you have a hard time peeling it off.

I'm on the 3rd day so I can't say I see a significant different yet but I know it is working - it is just a matter of how many days it'll take. It says seven days for best results, but the pack has 14 strips (2 week supply). I wish they disclosed the amount of hydrogen peroxide used in these strips as some of the other strips will list the percentage - these one didn't. The ingredients are listed on the box packaging but not the individual foil packets. I really like these strips and think they work great in terms of how it sticks, what it is doing, and the aftermath. I did not experience any of that teeth sensitivity feeling which is what often puts people off from using stuff like this.

I am using this alongside Plus Ultra's toothpaste, which I really like. I would say the only slightly disappointing thing about these is the strips are made in China. Nowhere does it say that on this Amazon page, which almost feels like a little trickery. I was just a little surprised because their toothpaste is made in the USA yet these aren't. Having tried quite a few whitening strip brands I've been noticing a lot of these are now made in China, which is why I made sure to check these, and sure enough! I don't know what the price difference is to manufacture strips in the US vs China but after seeing quite a few brands doing that I'm now very curious. And also, what about toothpaste?
