How do you display blankets in a basket?

13 Apr.,2024

Raise your hand if you can see your couch right now.

Raise your hand if you have two minutes.

Oh, good.

That’s all you need to make your couch cuter.

Seriously.

One of the easiest, simplest, fastest ways to decorate your couch is to add a throw.

Most of us have stacks of throws sitting around our house. We saw them online or a friend gave us a couple or we bought a few at a yard sale. They are just sitting in stacks right now because we don’t know what to do with them.

We are throw-stymied.

Throw-challenged.

Throw-stumped.

That’s why I’m here to bridge the throw-decorating gap. You have throws. I have ideas.

Let’s start making our house cuter today.

Here are 11 ways to display throw blankets (and a round-up of some of the cutest throw blankets ever).

1. Draped over a couch

When planning out ways to display throws, you want to place them where you can actually use them.

There is nothing cozier than snuggling down into a couch and reaching up for a throw.

The key to this look?

Lay the throw flat, then reach and grab the very center of the throw. Let it hang down from the center and place that center over the back of the couch.

The rest of the throw will fall into place.

Simply fluff and arrange the throw and place pillows on top.

2. Folded up on a stool

I have throws folded everywhere.

Just a hint.

If they have tassels or pom-poms, you want to fold them so the pom-poms or tassels are all on the same side. Fold the throw so it’s small enough to fit on the stool and let the pom-poms or tassels drape over the side.

This tassel throw is one of my very favorites.

You can get it here.

3. Draped over the side of a basket

To get this look, you want to start with a little bit of height.

To achieve this, I usually stack 1 or 2 throws in a basket. Then I fold up the cutest throw and drape it over the side.

(total aside: can you believe I got this basket at a yard sale for only $1.)

4. Draped over the arm of a chair

This throw just showed up at the house.

Isn’t it the cutest?

You can personalize it with your initial and it comes in so many different sizes and styles. You can see it here.

Here I’ve draped it over the side of a chair, just waiting for conversation and coffee.

(total aside: DO NOT overthink this option. You can toss it a zillion times and it will never look perfect or exactly the way you want it to. That’s okay. You want it to look effortless. Just toss it over the side of the chair and go.)

5. Folded into thirds on top of the duvet cover at the end of the bed

This is an EASY way to make your throw look like so much more.

If you need a little bit of color at the end of your bed? Simply fold a duvet or comforter in half (for height and coziness). Then fold the throw into thirds and place it on top of the folded duvet cover.

The white duvet cover is pretty.

But when you add the pop of color with the navy throw it looks spectacular.

6. Draped all the way over the chair with a pillow in the center

This is a version of number one.

Except you add it to a chair.

Instead of just draping it over the arm of the chair, you go all in. Place it over the center of the chair and then add a pillow on top.

You can see a version of this throw in different colors here.

7. Draped over the corner of the bed with a tray on top

This is an easy way to add a little color and texture to the end of the bed.

The key to this look is finding the corner of the bed that’s closest to the door. Then lay the throw flat, then reach and grab the very center of the throw. Let it hang down from the center and place that center over the corner of the bed.

The rest of the throw will fall into place.

Fluff and place a tray on top.

8. Draped over a bench

Have a bench?

Why not add a throw?

Last fall, to add color and texture to the bench in my hallway, I just tossed a throw over the edge.

Then add some of these to the space and your room is instantly cozier.

9. Folded over a ladder

This is a ladder I rescued from the trash.

I leaned it against the wall in the living room and folded a throw into thirds and added it to the ladder.

If you want to add multiple throws to the ladder, you would have the ends draped to the back instead.

It’s an easy way to add a little color and texture to the space.

10. Draped over a dining chair

Add a throw to the end chairs at the dining table.

You can toss it over the corner like I’ve done or you can fold it into thirds and place it over the back of the chair.

It’s an unexpected way to cozy up the dining room.

11. Folded in half and placed at the end of the bed

This is a version of number seven, but without the duvet cover.

Here, the throw is folded in half and added to the end of the bed.

These throws would work really well with this option.

You can see them here and here.

Here are some of the cutest throws to add to your couch or chair or stool or ladder or dining room chair or bench.

All you need is two minutes.

And a throw like one of these.

Your couch is looking cuter already. 🙂

Techniques for Displaying Throw Blankets

Fold and Stack:

The fold and stack technique is one of the simplest and most straightforward ways to display throw blankets in a basket. To achieve this look, simply fold each blanket neatly in half and then stack them one on top of the other inside the basket. This technique works best with baskets that have a wide opening, as it allows you to see all of the blankets at once. If you have multiple colors or patterns, try alternating the order of the blankets to add interest to the display.

Roll and Tuck:

The roll and tuck technique is similar to the fold and stack method, but with a bit of a twist. Instead of folding each blanket in half, you’ll want to roll them up tightly, tucking in the ends to keep them in place. Once you’ve rolled up each blanket, place them side by side in the basket, alternating the direction of the rolls to create a zig-zag pattern. This technique is great for baskets with a more narrow opening, as it makes it easier to see the different textures and patterns of each blanket.

Drape and Pile:

The drape and pile technique are all about creating a relaxed and casual look. To achieve this look, simply drape each blanket over the sides of the basket, allowing the edges to fall loosely inside. The result is a messy and cozy pile that looks as though the blankets have been tossed in the basket without any care. This technique works best with baskets that have a more open design, as it allows the blankets to spill out and be seen from all angles.

Comparison of Techniques:

Each of the above techniques has its own unique look and feel, and the best one for you will depend on the size and style of your basket, as well as your personal preference. The fold and stack technique is the most structured and organized, making it great for a minimalist or modern home. The roll and tuck technique adds a bit of texture and visual interest, making it perfect for baskets with a more traditional design. The drape and pile technique are the most relaxed and carefree, making it ideal for homes with a more bohemian or casual style. Experiment with each technique to find the one that best suits your home.
